This chapter overviews persuasive writing and questions you should ask yourself while reading a persuasive paper. It explains how to evaluate persuasive writting and what different important pieces the paper should include. The chapter also overviews different persuasive strategies when writing a paper. This will be very useful for me because it isnt always easy writting a persuasive paper. Also, this chapter explains how to critique and how to evaluate if the author succeeded his or her purpose.
This chapter did outline persuasive writing. It talked about the language you need to use when writing a persuasive paper. In the section where it talked about persuasive strategies, there were a lot listed. You need clearly defined terms, Fair use of information, Emotionally loaded terms are often used. These are used in attempt to change the readers mind by using emotional words. Some more strategies are, Faulty cause and effect, Either/or reasoning, Hasty generilization, false analogy, begging the question, non sequitur, and oversimplification. All these different strategies are used when writing persuasive papers. This chapter also outlined out to write a critique. The book broke the critique down into five sections: the introduction, summary, assessment of the presentation, your response, and the conclusion. In your critique you always want to include what extent the author made their point and if you agree or disagree with them. This chapter was very useful for me. The outline on writing a critique was very useful for me because there is a lot involved when evaluating someone else's writing.
